See Standout Celebrity Fashion Moments from the 2018 Met Gala
The Met Gala 2018, themed Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, was a monumental display of over-the-top fashions and artistic opulence. The industry’s top designers, artists, and performers came together at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to celebrate the Costume Institute’s latest display, and participated in the Christianity-inspired costumery themselves.
Tons of our favorite celebrity guests went wild in interpreting this year’s grand theme, and filled the event’s red carpet with many fashion moments inspired by the Catholic Church. Check out our Met Gala 2018 style recap below to see just a sampling of our statement-making favorites.
Rihanna
Leave it to Rihanna to make one of the most memorable Met Gala appearances of all time. And somehow make it all look easy and natural. The singer – and co-host of this year’s event – made her statement in a Maison Margiela Artisanal outfit designed for her by John Galliano. Are you catching pope vibes from her bold headpiece?
Zendaya
21-year-old actress Zendaya channeled the iconic figure Joan of Arc with her custom-molded Versace armor dress and sparkling Tiffany and Co. jewels. The star debuted a choppy, short red hairstyle and bangs just for this occasion.
Ariana Grande
Princess moment alert! 24-year-old singer Ariana Grande debuted a stunning Sistine Chapel-inspired Vera Wang ball gown for her first Met Gala appearance, complete with a coordinating gauzy hair ribbon. As she revealed on her Instagram, the scene on her dress is from The Last Judgement.
Selena Gomez
25-year-old signer and Coach fashion muse Selena Gomez was a vision in a custom billowing white Stuart Vevers creation. She paired her look with a tiny purse she hand-wrote Bible verse Proverbs 31:30 on, and some chiffon ribbons also bearing inspirational messages.
Shawn Mendes and Hailey Baldwin
19-year-old singer Shawn Mendes and 21-year-old model Hailey Baldwin paired up for their turn down the Met Gala 2018 red carpet. Not only do they look precious together, but they were both wearing Tommy Hilfiger Bespoke.
Cara Delevingne
Nobody makes a statement quite like Cara Delevingne! For the Met Gala 2018, the 25-year-old model wore a daring Dior Couture creation defined by its edgy black cage-like detailing. She “walked the line between sacred and profane, lending an air of sinful mystery in her #DiorCouture by #MariaGraziaChiuri dress,” the brand shared on Instagram, perfectly summing up the look.
Madonna
Many fans were looking forward to seeing Madonna‘s Met Gala look this season, especially because she has famously incorporated Catholic iconography into her stage costumes and personal styles in the past. She didn’t disappoint in the slightest, wearing a positively regal Jean Paul Gaultier creation, and more armor-like accessories she revealed were inspired by Joan of Arc.
Ashley Graham
Model Ashley Graham was radiant in her Atelier Prabal Gurung gown, which – like Madonna’s and Zendaya’s – was also inspired by Joan of Arc. This golden interpretation is so luxurious, crafted with one million oxidized gold hand-embroidered sequins (!!!) and paired with contrasting jewelry pieces.
Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez always makes a statement, but her custom Balmain style takes the cake. Not only is her fierce and colorful Olivier Rousteing look sensational, but the gown is being auctioned off to support a great cause: the Red fight against AIDS.
Blake Lively
Blake Lively went all out with opulent drama for this year’s Met Gala look. The 30-year-old actress rocked a ruby red Atelier Versace gown with intricate golden beading and a dramatic train for her grand arrival to the event.
Hailee Steinfeld
21-year-old actress Hailee Steinfeld had a total Style Queen moment at this year’s event, and so it’s only fitting she was rocking a tiara the whole time! The star donned an ethereal white Prabal Gurung dress for her astounding eighth annual appearance at the Met Gala festivities.
Cardi B
You know that Cardi B‘s debut at the Met Gala was going to be sensational, but the rapper had a blast attending the event with Moschino designer Jeremy Scott. The two coordinated in their dazzling beaded custom-creations – which look like they are straight out of church stained glass window scenes.
Gisele Bündchen
The story behind supermodel Gisele Bündchen‘s Met Gala 2018 gown is so incredible! “The fabric and lining used are both 100% organic silk ecologically dyed, the threads are 100% organic cotton and everything is certificated as GOTS: Global Organic Textile Standard,” she shared on Instagram about her dazzling gold Versace “eco dress.”
Lana del Rey and Jared Leto
Gucci‘s Alessandro Michele dressed artists Lana del Rey and Jared Leto for the Met Gala 2018, and the trio posed together for some jaw-dropping fashion portraits together. The coordination – and pops of blue and gold detailing – is all seriously on point!
